How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

At Worthington Landscape & Design, we often find clients in Loughborough and the wider East Midlands seeking ways to make more of their outdoor spaces. One common request is how a tired, patchy lawn can be transformed into a usable patio combined with planting areas that bring interest and colour. This type of project improves the garden’s functionality and appearance, turning what was once an underwhelming space into somewhere to relax and entertain.

In a recent project, we started by assessing the existing lawn and garden layout. The lawn was uneven, suffered from poor drainage, and was limited in practical use. Our suggestion was to introduce a patio area where outdoor furniture could be placed, alongside raised planting beds to add height and definition. Working with levels was important here to ensure good drainage and safe step-free access from the house.

The layout aimed to balance paved surface with planting space. We proposed installing an Indian sandstone patio due to its natural look and durability. The typical installed guide price for this type of patio ranges from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on site conditions. This includes straightforward access and normal ground preparation, but the final cost may vary based on ground levels, drainage needs, and clearance requirements.

To add planting interest and structure, we incorporated railway sleeper raised beds along one edge of the patio. These raised beds offer a sturdy frame for soil and plants, elevating the greenery and making maintenance easier. Pricing for railway sleeper beds generally sits between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, influenced by the grade of sleeper, height, and ground preparation needed.

The project involved careful ground preparation including clearing the old turf, levelling the site, and installing a proper base for the patio slabs to ensure longevity and prevent future sinking. Once groundwork was complete, the Indian sandstone slabs were laid with a slight fall away from the house to aid drainage. This attention to levels helps prevent water pooling on the surface, which is key for outdoor safety and maintenance.

Between the patio and planting beds, areas left for turfing were re-seeded or resodded to complete the garden transformation. Turfing costs vary but typically come between GBP 18 and GBP 35 per square metre, assuming ground is already prepared. Where clearance or levelling is extensive, these costs can increase accordingly.

For clients considering similar changes, a 3D garden design service is also available. This helps visualise how the space will look before work begins, allowing for adjustments in layout and material choice. Typical prices for 3D design range from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on the garden size and number of revisions required.

Every landscaping project is different, and final quotes will depend on several factors including site access, ground levels, drainage needs, and chosen materials. We always recommend a site visit to discuss requirements and provide an accurate estimate tailored to your garden’s specifics.
