Recently, a client in the East Midlands approached Worthington Landscape & Design to help transform their tired, patchy lawn into a more usable outdoor space. The goal was to create a balance between a functional patio area and attractive planting beds, maximising the garden’s potential for everyday use and enjoyment.
The existing lawn was uneven with some low spots that caused poor drainage. After a detailed site visit, I proposed re-grading the area to introduce gentle levels, which would provide natural falls for water runoff and create visual interest. This also helped separate the patio from the planting zones without the need for formal edging.
For the patio surface, we discussed two main options: Indian sandstone and porcelain slabs. Indian sandstone offers a natural look aligned with the East Midlands style and costs roughly GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre for installation under typical ground conditions with straightforward access. Porcelain, a harder-wearing and low-maintenance option, comes with a higher price tag of GBP 110 to GBP 150 per square metre, depending on slab choice and complexity of cuts needed.
In this project, Indian sandstone was selected due to its warm tones and suitability for the garden’s character. The patio size was planned to comfortably fit seating and a BBQ area, with enough space to circulate freely. Careful consideration was given to falls and drainage to prevent puddling and ensure the surface remained safe and comfortable year-round.
To add structure and planting space, raised beds constructed from railway sleepers were incorporated along the patio edges. Railway sleeper costs vary between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper grade, height, and fixing method. These raised beds provide easy maintenance and clear separation between paved and planted areas.
The planting design included a mix of low-maintenance shrubs and seasonal plants to add year-round colour and texture. The raised beds make it easier to manage soil quality and drainage for healthy growth, while also softening the hard landscaping elements.
Throughout the process, a 3D garden design was utilised to help visualise the new layout and levels before work began. These designs typically range from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on garden size and design revisions, providing clients a clear picture of the finished space and helping avoid surprises.
Final pricing depends on factors like site access, existing ground conditions, drainage needs, and clearance work. The costs outlined here serve as a practical guide but may vary after a full site survey.
