How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

In many gardens around Loughborough and the East Midlands, tired lawns with patchy grass and uneven ground can limit how the outdoor space is used and enjoyed. One practical solution is to transform these areas into a combination of patios and planting zones, offering both functionality and appeal.

Recently, we worked on a garden where a worn lawn was reimagined to create a welcoming patio area alongside raised planting beds. The layout aimed to maximise usable space while introducing different levels to add interest and improve drainage. By breaking up the garden into zones, the final design offers a versatile outdoor area suitable for relaxing and gardening.

The initial step involved assessing the existing surface levels and planning the new layout to suit the client’s needs and site conditions. In this case, a slight fall was maintained to ensure proper drainage away from the house, which is crucial for patios. Raised beds using railway sleepers added height variation and a planting space distinct from the patio.

For the patio surface, Indian sandstone was chosen for its natural appearance and suitability for the local environment. Prices generally range from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square meter for straightforward installations with good access and typical ground conditions. This material provides a durable yet attractive finish, blending well with timber features like the sleeper beds.

The raised beds made from railway sleepers cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on factors like sleeper grade and height. They create defined planting areas that can accommodate shrubs, perennials, or seasonal flowers, adding colour and texture to the garden throughout the year.

Some clearance and ground preparation were required to remove the old lawn and level the sub-base. These can affect the overall cost and timeline, so it’s important to get a site visit and detailed quote. Turfing or additional planting areas outside the main patio zones might also be part of the project depending on garden size and client preference.

For those interested in seeing how the proposed layout will fit their garden, a 3D garden design can be helpful. Prices for this service range from GBP 150 to GBP 450 based on garden size and the number of revisions needed. This step can clarify how different materials, levels, and elements will come together in the space.

Every landscaping project is unique because of site conditions, access, drainage needs, and material choices. We recommend arranging a free site visit to discuss requirements and receive a tailored quote before making any decisions.
