Recently, we worked on a garden transformation project in the East Midlands where a tired, uneven lawn was limiting the outdoor usability for the homeowner. The goal was to create a more practical space combining a patio for seating and dining with planting areas to maintain greenery and interest.
The initial layout was designed to improve flow and accommodate different outdoor uses without overcrowding the site. After assessing ground levels and drainage, we determined a split-level design would work best. This allowed a slightly raised patio area with steps down to planting beds constructed from railway sleepers, creating visual and functional separation.
To capture the homeowner’s vision, we provided a 3D garden design option priced between GBP 150 and GBP 450. This helped them visualize material choices, levels, and planting areas before work began and ensured everyone was aligned on the final look and feel.
For the patio, we installed Indian sandstone slabs at a guide cost of GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre. The choice balanced aesthetics, durability and budget while ensuring a flat, slip-resistant surface. The slabs were laid with a slight fall to aid water runoff, which helps reduce drainage issues common with patio areas.
Around the patio, we built railway sleeper raised beds. At GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, this was a cost-effective way to introduce structure, additional planting space and a natural look that complements the sandstone. We prepared the ground carefully to provide stability and longevity for the sleepers.

The transformation from a tired lawn to a versatile hard landscaping space achieved more than just a fresh look.
