We recently completed a landscaping project for a customer in the East Midlands looking to convert a tired, underused lawn into a more functional outdoor area. The goal was to create a usable patio space complemented by planting beds that would improve both the look and utility of the garden.
The existing lawn was uneven, patchy, and limited the potential for entertaining or relaxing outside. For the patio surfacing, we offered two common options: Indian sandstone and porcelain slabs. Indian sandstone typically costs between GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, suitable for straightforward access and standard ground conditions. Porcelain is pricier—ranging from GBP 110 to GBP 150 per square metre—but offers greater durability and a modern finish. Final pricing always depends on slab choice, cuts, falls, and site prep.
The layout featured subtle level changes to help with drainage and visual interest. These were achieved through careful ground levelling and the use of railway sleeper raised beds at GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on the sleeper quality, height, and fixing method. Raised beds reduce maintenance and provide clear separation between patio and planting areas.
As the garden was transformed from lawn to paving, we also factored in turfing around planting zones priced at GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre. If clearance, levelling, or additional topsoil is needed, that would affect the final quote.
