How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

At Worthington Landscape & Design, we recently worked on a project where the client’s tired lawn was struggling to serve their needs. Located in the Loughborough area of the East Midlands, the garden had uneven levels and patchy grass that left little room for outdoor living. Our goal was to create a more usable and attractive space by incorporating both hard landscaping and planting zones.

The first step was a thorough site visit to assess existing levels, ground conditions, drainage, and access. This allowed us to plan a practical layout that improved flow and maximised the use of space. Instead of trying to salvage the uneven lawn, we proposed replacing part of it with a patio area, suitable for seating and entertaining, alongside raised planting beds for better gardening opportunities.

We suggested a gently sloping design where the patio would sit at a slightly lower level than the planting beds. This created natural separation while helping with drainage and maintenance. To ensure durability and style, an Indian sandstone patio was chosen. Depending on the size and complexity, this type of patio typically costs between GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, assuming straightforward access and ground conditions.

Raised beds made from railway sleepers were used to add structure and height to the planting space. This method makes gardening easier and more visually appealing. Prices for railway sleeper raised beds commonly range from GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, influenced by sleeper grade, height, and installation style.

Hard landscaping elements like the patio and sleepers were complemented by turfing any remaining lawn areas. Proper preparation of the soil was carried out first to encourage healthy growth. Turfing prices generally fall between GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre, not including ground clearance or levelling.

A 3D garden design service helped the client visualise the transformation before any work began. This service, costing from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on garden size and revisions, is invaluable for planning layouts, materials, and planting ideas accurately.

Throughout the project, careful attention was paid to drainage and levels to avoid water pooling or maintenance issues. Practical considerations like site access and clearance influenced the final cost as well. These factors highlight why a site visit is important to provide a reliable quote tailored to each garden.

For clients in Loughborough and the wider East Midlands area considering how a tired lawn can become a usable patio and planting space, a balanced approach combining hard landscaping with quality planting areas can significantly improve outdoor living. Our experience shows that well-planned layouts and appropriate materials deliver lasting results.
