In many gardens across Loughborough and the wider East Midlands, tired lawns lose their appeal and functionality over time. This project involved transforming one such space into a meaningful patio and planting area that suited the clients’ everyday needs.
The existing lawn had uneven levels, poor drainage, and worn grass, making it difficult to maintain and enjoy. As a solution, the design focused on creating a clean, level patio area combined with raised planting beds, improving both usability and aesthetics.
We began the process with a thorough site visit, assessing access for materials and machinery, ground levels, drainage issues, and clearance requirements. This is an important step to provide accurate pricing and avoid surprises during the build phase.
Using 3D garden design techniques, the client could visualise layout options including shapes, levels, and materials. The final design called for a simple rectangular Indian sandstone patio, bordered by railway sleeper raised beds for planting. This choice balanced cost, durability, and local character.
The Indian sandstone patio was priced between GBP 90 and GBP 120 per square metre, reflecting straightforward access and typical ground conditions. Installing a level, stable base was important, along with proper falls to ensure good drainage away from the house.
Railway sleeper raised beds at the edges added a practical planting space, priced roughly GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre. We used treated sleepers secured on a prepared foundation to provide durability and a neat finish that complements the stone patio.
Additional turfing was kept minimal, focusing on easy maintenance planting within the raised beds. Turfing, if required, is usually priced GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre but can vary depending on ground preparation needed.
