How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

Recently, we took on a project where a tired, patchy lawn in a Loughborough garden was transformed into a functional patio and planting space. This kind of landscaping work is ideal for homeowners wanting to get more from their outdoor areas, especially in the East Midlands where gardens are often at their best during the summer months.

The existing lawn had uneven levels and was suffering from poor drainage and bare patches, making it both unusable and unappealing. Our first step was to review the layout carefully. We worked with the customer to find the best way to use the available space, balancing hard landscaping with planting zones to create an inviting garden.

Levels needed adjusting to ensure a smooth transition from the house to the garden whilst also providing good fall for drainage away from the patio area. By regrading the soil and adding a sub-base for the hard landscaping, we set the stage for a long-lasting finish that would cope well with weather conditions typical of the region.

For the patio, we recommended Indian sandstone as a natural, durable option that suits many garden styles here in the East Midlands. Installed, this typically costs between £90 and £120 per square metre, assuming straightforward access and typical ground conditions. This price includes base preparation, laying, and pointing work.

Complementing the patio, raised railway sleeper beds were added along one edge of the space. These provide attractive planting opportunities while also creating clear zones for different garden activities. Prices for railway sleeper beds generally fall between £85 and £140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper quality, fixing method, and site prep.

We also included new planting borders to soften the hard landscaping and add greenery. The client wanted a low-maintenance garden, so we carefully selected planting to match the soil and light conditions. Where limited turf remained, we laid fresh turf at around £18 to £35 per square metre, again depending on ground prep and clearance needed.

The transformation included 3D garden design services priced between £150 and £450, helping the client visualise the space before work began. This service accounts for garden size and number of revisions, ensuring the final design suited the client's tastes and practical needs.

As with all landscaping projects, final pricing depends on factors including site access, drainage requirements, clearance, ground levels, and material choices. A site visit is important to provide an accurate quote and to discuss any specific requests or challenges that might arise.
