How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

Converting a tired lawn into a usable patio and planting space is a popular way to refresh gardens in Loughborough and the East Midlands. Often, lawns become patchy, uneven, or difficult to maintain, making them less enjoyable. By rethinking the space with a practical layout and levels, we can create areas that are better suited for outdoor living and planting alike.

Recently, we worked on a project where the existing lawn was showing signs of wear, with uneven patches and poor drainage. Our first step was a site visit to assess the garden's natural levels and soil condition. Understanding these elements helps us design a space that avoids future problems like water pooling or uneven settling.

Based on our assessment, we proposed a patio area made from Indian sandstone, a popular choice in the region for its natural look and durability. Indian sandstone patios typically cost between GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, assuming straightforward access and normal ground conditions. For this project, the patio was laid on a slightly lowered section of the garden to provide a distinct seating area while promoting good drainage.

To complement the patio, we incorporated raised planting beds made from railway sleepers. These beds not only add structure but also improve soil quality by containing planting areas. Railway sleeper beds generally range from GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper grade and installation requirements. Here, sleepers were fixed and finished cleanly to match the patio’s earthy tones.

Before installing the patio and beds, we carried out necessary ground clearance and levelling to provide a firm base for all hard landscaping. Where required, additional topsoil was brought in to create healthy planting zones. Turfing prices, when included, usually run from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre, assuming ground preparation is already complete.

We advised the homeowner on drainage solutions to prevent water build-up on the new patio. Proper falls were incorporated into the stone laying to ensure rainwater runs off safely. These considerations are important to keep the space functional and low maintenance in the long term.

To make sure the layout worked well with the overall garden, we offered a 3D garden design option priced between GBP 150 and GBP 450 per project, depending on garden size and revisions. This helps visualize the transformation before any work begins and ensures satisfaction with the final layout and materials.

At Worthington Landscape & Design, we understand every garden is unique. Factors like access, ground conditions, and choice of materials can impact pricing and installation methods. We always recommend a site visit for a tailored quote and advice on making the most of your outdoor space.
