Recently, we worked on a project in the Loughborough area where a tired, patchy lawn was transformed into a practical and attractive outdoor space combining a patio and dedicated planting areas. This example highlights how thoughtful landscaping can improve the usability of a garden while making the most of the available levels and layout.
The original garden had uneven ground and a lawn that was struggling to thrive. Our first step was to assess the levels and drainage. It’s important to consider these factors early on, as they influence how the finished patio sits and how planting beds retain moisture without causing waterlogging.
After the initial site visit, we designed a solution that retained some lawn space but also introduced a generous Indian sandstone patio for usable outdoor seating and entertaining. We chose Indian sandstone here as it offers a natural, timeless finish suitable for the East Midlands climate. Pricing for Indian sandstone patios generally ranges from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on site conditions such as access, levelling and drainage.
The layout was arranged so the patio started adjacent to the house, stepping down slightly to accommodate the natural slope of the garden. Retaining walls made from railway sleepers were incorporated to define the planting beds. These sleepers not only add a rustic charm but also provide practical raised beds for easier maintenance. Railway sleeper raised beds typically cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper quality and installation requirements.
The planting areas were designed to complement the patio both visually and functionally, with rich planting soil improving plant health and drainage. Where new turf was required, we used high-quality turf laid over prepared ground to create a neat finish. Turfing usually costs from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre, excluding clearance and ground levelling if needed.
Hard landscaping was kept straightforward but effective, avoiding overly complex cuts or intricate paving layouts that could increase costs. This approach helps to keep projects within an affordable range while still delivering a durable and attractive outdoor space that suits everyday needs.
We also offer 3D garden design services, which in this case helped the client visualise the finished transformation before work began. 3D designs cost between GBP 150 and GBP 450 depending on garden size and complexity, and include revisions to ensure the final plan meets expectations.
Every project is unique, and final quotes depend on site-specific factors such as access, levels, drainage, clearance and material choices. We recommend a site visit to discuss your garden and identify the best solution tailored to your needs.
