How a Tired Lawn Can Become a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

Recently, we took on a project in the Loughborough area where the client wanted to update a tired, patchy lawn that was underused and cumbersome to maintain. The goal was to create a more functional outdoor space that combined both a patio area for seating and socialising, and planting zones for added colour and interest.

The initial stage was a site visit to assess the existing ground conditions, levels, and access. The lawn area showed uneven levels and compacted soil, which meant some ground clearance and levelling work was needed. We discussed the benefits of introducing different levels to visually separate the patio and planting areas, which would also help with drainage and reduce water pooling on the paved surfaces.

Following the consultation, we produced a 3D garden design to help the client visualise the new layout. This design included a gently sloping Indian sandstone patio as the main seating area, complemented by raised planting beds built from railway sleepers to add height and structure. The beds would be an inviting spot for shrubs, perennials and seasonal flowers.

For the patio, Indian sandstone was chosen as a material that offers a natural, durable finish with characterful colours suited to the local East Midlands style. The typical installed cost for this patio ranged from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on the access and required preparation work. We advised that final pricing could vary based on site-specific factors such as levels, drainage needs and any complex cuts or angles in the paving.

The raised beds constructed from treated railway sleepers were estimated at GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre. The price depended on sleeper grade, bed height, fixing methods and the level of ground preparation. Using sleepers keeps the build relatively straightforward while offering a robust framework for planting and easy maintenance.

Once the layout and materials were agreed, site works began with careful clearance of the old lawn and shaping of the ground to create the two-level design. Ground preparation included laying a suitable sub-base for the patio, ensuring proper falls to prevent water pooling. The sleepers were installed securely with adequate fixing, and the planters filled with quality soil mix ready for planting.

Finishing the project, the Indian sandstone slabs were professionally laid to create a smooth, safe surface with natural texture and colour variation. The planting beds brought life and greenery into the space, making the garden much more usable and visually pleasing.

In summary, converting a tired lawn into a usable patio and planting space in Loughborough involves thoughtful design, attention to ground levels and preparation, and choosing appropriate materials.
