A common challenge for homeowners in the Loughborough and East Midlands area is dealing with tired lawns that no longer serve their outdoor needs. Recently, Worthington Landscape & Design helped a local client transform their patchy, uneven lawn into a practical patio with complementary planting zones, creating a more usable and attractive garden space.
The project began with an initial site assessment to understand the lawn’s condition, soil levels, drainage, and access. This is an important stage as it informs the design and price depending on factors like groundwork, slopes, and clearance. Where helpful, we can offer a 3D garden design service priced between GBP 150 and GBP 450, tailored to the garden size and number of revisions.
For the new layout, the lawn area was largely replaced with an Indian sandstone patio, offering a durable and natural finish that suits a variety of garden styles. Indian sandstone patios typically cost between GBP 90 and GBP 120 per square metre for straightforward projects with normal ground conditions. This stone choice balances aesthetic appeal and practicality well for the local climate.
The patio layout was designed to maintain good flow and levels across the garden space, with subtle falls incorporated to ensure effective drainage away from the house and planting beds. Careful attention to levels prevents water pooling and supports long-term durability of the hard landscaping.
To frame the patio and add visual interest, we created raised planting beds using railway sleepers. These cost roughly GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper grade and bed height. Railway sleeper beds are a robust option suitable for growing a variety of plants and contribute to the garden’s structure while blending naturally with the stone patio.
Where the remaining lawn area was retained or added, turfing was undertaken to create fresh green spaces, using prepared ground where possible. Turfing costs range from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre, excluding groundwork such as clearance and levelling which is quoted separately depending on site conditions.
Throughout the project, material selection and installation details were discussed with the client to ensure the finish matched their expectations and budget. Projects like this highlight how a tired lawn can be turned into a practical, usable outside space that combines hard landscaping with planting areas, enhancing both visual appeal and garden functionality.
