Transforming a Tired Lawn into a Usable Patio and Planting Space in Loughborough

In many East Midlands gardens, including those in Loughborough, a tired and patchy lawn can often lead to underutilised outdoor space. Recently, a project was undertaken to transform such a lawn into a practical area featuring a patio alongside defined planting zones, offering both usability and visual appeal.

The first step was assessing the existing lawn's condition, levels, and drainage. The garden presented a slightly uneven surface with worn turf and poor drainage in places, making it less than ideal for recreational use in its current state. To improve usability, we planned a multi-level layout creating distinct areas for relaxing and gardening.

The design called for a smooth, level patio using Indian sandstone. This material was chosen for its natural look and durability, providing a warm, welcoming finish that complements the surrounding East Midlands environment. The typical cost for installing Indian sandstone patios ranges from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on access and ground conditions. This cost includes supply and installation but will vary if the site requires extensive preparation or drainage work.

Adjacent to the patio, raised planting beds made from timber railway sleepers were installed to add structure and definition to the garden. Railway sleepers are a popular choice for raised beds due to their rustic look and sturdiness. The price for these beds typically ranges between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on the sleeper grade, bed height, fixing methods, and ground preparation needed.

Levelling between the patio and sleepers was carefully planned to ensure smooth transitions and proper water run-off. Creating subtle levels also divides the space naturally without needing fencing or borders, enhancing both aesthetics and function. If the existing levels are too steep or uneven, additional groundwork may be necessary, which can affect the overall quote.

To reinstate a bit of green, new turf was laid in the remaining areas. Turfing prices vary from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre and assume the ground is prepared and ready; extra clearance, levelling, or topsoil will add to costs. The fresh turf brings softness alongside the hard landscaping elements and provides a balanced outdoor environment suitable for families and entertaining.

To visualise the transformation beforehand, a 3D garden design was created, enabling adjustments to the layout, material selection, and levels before work began. Costs for 3D design services start from GBP 150 and can go up to GBP 450 per project based on garden size and revisions requested. This step helps ensure that the final installation meets expectations and maximises garden usability.

Every garden and project factor—like access for machinery, site clearance, drainage requirements, and exact material choices—affects the final price. A site visit is essential to provide a tailored quote and advice suited to the client’s priorities and budget.
