A common challenge in many Loughborough gardens is a tired lawn that sees little use and offers limited visual appeal. Transforming that space into a functional patio combined with planting areas can bring new life and usability to your outdoor environment. Worthington Landscape & Design recently worked on such a project, turning a neglected lawn into a neat, practical garden space suitable for everyday use.
The initial stage involved assessing the existing lawn layout, levels, and soil condition. The lawn was relatively flat but uneven in places, which gave us the opportunity to carefully plan for drainage and level changes. A core part of the design was to break the space into two zones: a smooth, hard-paved patio area for seating and entertaining, and adjoining planting beds framed with railway sleepers to add structure and greenery.
We proposed an Indian sandstone patio, chosen for its natural texture and warm tones that suit the East Midlands environment. The area was excavated to create a stable sub-base before laying the paving slabs to ensure long-lasting durability. Indian sandstone patios are priced between GBP 90 and GBP 120 per square metre, depending on access and ground conditions. In this case, the terrain was straightforward, keeping costs within the typical range.
Along one edge of the patio, we installed raised planting beds made from high-quality railway sleepers. These sleepers cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, with the price reflecting sleeper grade and fixing method. Raised beds not only define the space but also enable easier gardening and introduce height variation, enhancing the overall layout.
A slight change in level was introduced between the patio and the lawn area, with a gentle step to manage drainage and create a clear distinction between hard and soft landscaping. The remaining lawn was returfed with fresh turf, priced typically between GBP 18 and GBP 35 per square metre. We recommended this approach only after proper ground preparation including levelling and clearance to ensure a healthy, even finish.
Where a garden feels tired, the right combination of hard landscaping and planting space elevates both the look and function of the space. By adding patios and raised beds, you gain a low-maintenance entertaining area alongside vibrant greenery. This balance is essential in many East Midlands gardens, offering year-round enjoyment.
Our service includes the option of a 3D garden design for precise planning. This helps visualise the layout, materials and features before work begins, with prices ranging from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on garden size and complexity. We strongly recommend considering this step especially for complex or uneven sites.
Every landscaping project is unique. Final pricing depends on factors such as site access, ground levels, drainage requirements, clearance, and the specific materials chosen.
