At Worthington Landscape & Design, we often encounter gardens where the lawn has become tired, patchy, or simply not serving the family’s current needs. Recently, we worked on a project in Loughborough where the client wanted to transform their underused lawn into a practical and attractive patio area combined with planting beds to add interest and texture.
The starting point was assessing the site's layout and levels. The original lawn was uneven with a slight slope. To make the new patio safe and comfortable, it was essential to create a level surface. This sometimes involves minor excavation or adding sub-base materials to the ground. Proper drainage was also considered, ensuring that water will flow away from the house and planting areas, avoiding puddles or damp spots.
For the patio surface, the client chose Indian sandstone. This natural stone provides a warm and timeless finish, suitable for the East Midlands climate. Guide prices for Indian sandstone patios range from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on the complexity of access and ground conditions. We advised that choices like porcelain could also be considered for a different aesthetic, typically costing GBP 110 to GBP 150 per square metre, but the final price depends on slab specification and cuts.
Hard landscaping wasn't the only focus. To enhance the usability and visual appeal, we incorporated raised planting beds built using railway sleepers. Railway sleeper beds offer a durable structure and a rustic look. Pricing for these generally falls between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, influenced by sleeper grade, bed height, fixing methods, and preparation needed on site.
Creating levels in the garden with the patio and raised beds helped to define different zones without overwhelming the space. The layout allowed a smooth transition from the patio seating area to the planting zones, making the garden feel larger and more functional. This approach works well in typical Loughborough gardens, balancing hard and soft landscaping elements.
Where turf was retained around the edges or in between planting beds, we ensured fresh turf was installed on well-prepared ground, an important detail to avoid future patchiness. Turfing costs between GBP 18 and GBP 35 per square metre, with additional charges applying for clearance, levelling, or improving soil quality if required.
A 3D garden design was created to help the client visualise the finished project and fine-tune details before work began. These designs generally cost between GBP 150 and GBP 450 depending on the garden's size and the number of revisions needed. A clear plan helps ensure smooth project delivery with minimal surprises.
Every project is unique, and final quotes depend on factors such as site access, ground conditions, existing levels, drainage requirements, clearance, and material specifications. We always recommend a site visit to provide accurate advice and reliable pricing tailored to your garden.
