A common challenge in gardens across Loughborough and the East Midlands is dealing with tired lawns that no longer serve their original purpose well. Recently, Worthington Landscape & Design worked with a local homeowner looking to refresh their outdoor space by converting a large, patchy lawn into a more functional patio and planting area.
The project began with a full site visit to assess the existing layout, ground levels, and drainage situation. These factors are critical in determining what groundwork is necessary and how any new patio will integrate with remaining planting beds. Where necessary, slight re-leveling was planned to ensure proper falls for drainage away from the house.
To create a clear and usable layout, we divided the space into two zones: a paved patio for seating and entertaining, and adjacent raised planting beds made from durable railway sleepers. This combination maximised usability while introducing structure and height variation for visual interest.
The patio was installed using Indian sandstone, chosen for its natural colours and slip resistance. Installed prices for Indian sandstone patios typically range from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre, depending on site access, ground conditions and specific materials used. In this project, the straightforward access and gentle levels helped keep costs within the lower end of the guide price.
For the raised beds, railway sleepers were selected due to their rustic look and sturdiness. Installation cost for sleepers typically ranges from GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper grade, height and fixing method. Each bed was carefully constructed to ensure good soil depth and support healthy plant growth.
Once hard landscaping was completed, new turfing was added to any remaining lawn areas to freshen up the green space. Turfing usually costs between GBP 18 and GBP 35 per square metre, assuming the ground is prepared, as was the case here. This final touch complemented the patio and planting zones, creating a balanced outdoor environment.
To help visualise the overall transformation before work began, a 3D garden design was produced. This step provided the homeowner with a clear picture of the finished space and allowed us to adjust layouts to suit preferences. 3D garden design projects generally cost from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on garden size and revisions requested.
Every landscaping project is unique, so final costs will vary based on access, levels, drainage requirements, clearance needs, and material specifications. A site visit remains the best way to provide an accurate quote tailored to your garden's particular conditions.
