A common challenge in many gardens across Loughborough and the wider East Midlands is a tired lawn that no longer serves its original purpose. Wear and tear, shade, and poor soil can make grass areas less inviting and harder to maintain. Recently, we worked on a project where the client wanted to turn their struggling lawn into a functional and attractive patio with planting zones.
The first step in this project was to assess the current lawn area, checking ground levels and drainage to plan for any necessary adjustments. One benefit of converting lawn space is the opportunity to improve garden levels, allowing water to drain away properly and avoid pooling. We also discussed with the client how they wanted to use the new space — for relaxing, entertaining, and displaying plants.
Our approach included surveying the site to inform a 3D garden design, priced typically between GBP 150 to GBP 450, depending on the garden size and any revisions. This helps the client visualise the layout and levels before work begins, making the process smoother and setting clear expectations.
We proposed a patio made from Indian sandstone, a popular choice in the East Midlands for its natural look and durability. Typical installation costs range from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre for straightforward access and normal ground conditions, but final pricing depends on factors such as ground preparation, drainage, and any necessary cutting of slabs to fit the design.
The project also included building raised planting beds using railway sleepers, which add structure and define planting areas adjacent to the patio. Railway sleeper beds usually cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, with the price varying according to sleeper quality, bed height, fixing method, and ground prep requirements.
Preparing the old lawn involved clearing turf and leveling the ground to create a stable base. Where required, we recommended adding a layer of topsoil and ensuring proper falls away from the house to prevent water issues. Although turfing prices typically range from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre, in this project, the existing lawn was removed entirely as part of the conversion.
Hard landscaping like patios and raised beds improve garden usability and reduce maintenance compared to worn grass areas. However, every project is different. Pricing guides provide a useful starting point, but final costs will depend on site specifics such as access, drainage works, ground levels, material choices, and any clearance needed before starting.
