A common challenge for many homeowners in Loughborough and the East Midlands is making better use of a tired, patchy lawn. This project shows how we turned a neglected grass area into a functional patio with surrounding planting beds, combining hard landscaping and soft gardening elements for year-round enjoyment.
The site had uneven levels and limited access, common issues in older gardens. We started by assessing the slope and drainage needs, then planned a layout that created a flat patio area while incorporating raised planting zones. Creating levels not only helped with water runoff but also added visual interest to the garden.
For the patio surface, Indian sandstone was chosen for its natural look and local availability. The price for installing an Indian sandstone patio typically ranges from GBP 90 to GBP 120 per square metre under straightforward conditions, but final costs vary depending on access, ground prep, cuts needed, and drainage solutions. The installed patio provided a durable, slip-resistant surface that fits well with the surrounding planting areas.
Adjacent to the patio, we built raised beds using railway sleepers. These add structure and help separate planting zones from the hard surface. Railway sleeper beds generally cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, influenced by sleeper quality, bed height, fixing techniques, and site preparation. They can also improve accessibility for planting and maintenance.
Where the lawn remained, we laid new turf to refresh the green spaces. Turfing prices are usually from GBP 18 to GBP 35 per square metre assuming the ground is prepared. Ground clearance, levelling, or topsoil replacement will add to the cost. Turf helps connect the hard landscaping with softer natural elements, creating a balanced garden feel.
