Initially, the lawn had uneven levels and poor grass quality, limiting its use for seating or entertaining. The aim was to create a flat, firm surface for paving while integrating raised planting beds to add greenery and structure. The design began with establishing levels. The garden sloped gently towards one corner, so we proposed a stepped solution with two main levels. The lower level was retained as a lawn area, while the upper was converted into a patio. This approach helps manage water runoff and visually defines different garden zones.
For the patio surface, Indian sandstone was chosen. It offers a natural look that complements the East Midlands landscape and is robust enough for regular use. Installed prices typically range between GBP 90 and GBP 120 per square metre, assuming straightforward access and normal ground conditions. Porcelain paving is an alternative, but given its higher cost (GBP 110 to GBP 150 per square metre) and sensitive installation requirements, Indian sandstone made sense here.
To frame the planting areas, railway sleeper raised beds were constructed. These add a rustic charm and practical benefits like improved soil management and easier access for planting. Expect to budget GBP 85 to GBP 140 per linear metre, depending on sleeper grade, height, and fixing methods. Preparing the ground properly ensures the beds remain stable over time.
Hard landscaping works also included clearing the existing lawn and prepping the ground with appropriate drainage solutions. Proper groundwork is essential to prevent future problems such as water pooling or paving upheaval. Due to varying site conditions, these elements can influence the final quote significantly.
Turfing was installed around the raised beds and the remaining level areas to provide fresh green space. Prices for turfing typically fall between GBP 18 and GBP 35 per square metre, assuming the ground is already prepared. Where major clearance or levelling is required, additional costs may apply.
