Recently, I worked on a project to transform a tired, uneven lawn into a practical and attractive patio and planting space. The garden was located in Loughborough and typified many typical suburban gardens where the lawn had become patchy and underused. The client wanted a low-maintenance outdoor area that could be enjoyed throughout the year, with clear zones for seating and planting beds for seasonal interest.
The first task was to assess the current layout and ground levels. The lawn sloped gently towards the rear fence and had some drainage issues. By adjusting levels slightly and installing proper sub-base drainage when laying the patio, we were able to avoid future pooling water. Good drainage is critical when converting lawns into hard landscaping to preserve the longevity of the patio surface.
For the patio, we selected Indian sandstone because it offers a natural look and reasonable price. Installed, Indian sandstone patios typically range from £90 to £120 per square metre, depending on site specifics like access and ground conditions. The client opted for a straightforward layout with clean lines and a slight fall to encourage water runoff towards existing drainage channels.
Hard landscaping was complemented with raised planting beds constructed from railway sleepers. These raised beds provide structure and define the patio area without the need for fencing or complicated boundaries. Railway sleeper beds usually cost between £85 and £140 per linear metre, according to sleeper quality, height, and fixing methods. In this project, the client preferred untreated sleepers to keep costs moderate and enhance the natural aesthetic.
To help the client visualise the finished garden, I provided a 3D garden design early in the process. This is a valuable step to confirm layout, levels, and planting plans before work starts. My 3D designs typically range from £150 to £450 per project, depending on garden size and revisions. In this case, the design helped finalise the patio’s shape, planting areas, and access routes.
The finished patio offers a smooth, durable surface that is easy to clean and maintain, contrasting nicely with the timber textures of the railway sleeper beds filled with a variety of shrubs and perennials. The slight level changes were handled with steps and gentle ramps to maintain accessibility and create visual interest.
Overall, converting a tired lawn into a usable patio and planting space takes careful planning and experience with ground preparation, drainage, levels, and materials. It’s not just about laying slabs but creating an outdoor space tailored to how clients want to use their garden.
If you have a lawn that's past its best and are considering a transformation, a site visit is always worthwhile. Final prices depend on factors like access, current levels, drainage requirements, clearance, and exact materials chosen.
