Landscaping in the East Midlands isn’t always easy to schedule, especially with our variable weather. Wet conditions can slow or even halt some types of garden work, but there are still a number of tasks that can be carried out reliably in Loughborough and surrounding areas. Here, we outline what landscaping work can be done in wet weather, how to manage expectations and the importance of preparing the ground properly.
Firstly, heavy rain can cause muddy or waterlogged soil which limits the use of machinery and makes manual work tougher. To protect the ground and avoid soil compaction, ground protection mats or temporary boards are often used. This is a key consideration during hard landscaping tasks like patios and driveways, helping protect existing turf, soil structure and preventing rutting.
Drainage is crucial in wet weather landscaping. If a site is prone to standing water, it’s advisable to include surface or sub-surface drainage channels when designing patios or hard surfaces. This prevents water pooling and slipping hazards. Drainage installation, however, often needs reasonably dry conditions for best results.
When it comes to concreting and laying foundations, wet weather introduces challenges. Concrete can cure poorly if it’s washed out by rain or if temperatures drop. As a result, pours are scheduled on drier days where possible. However, small pours or repairs with fast-setting mixes may still be done during light rain with suitable covering to prevent washout.
Paving work such as installing Indian sandstone or porcelain patios can proceed cautiously. Indian sandstone patios generally cost between GBP 90 to GBP 120 per sqm, while porcelain patios range from GBP 110 to GBP 150 per sqm. These prices include typical installation on straightforward ground. Wet weather requires careful preparation including ensuring the base is well compacted and not overly saturated, to prevent later movement or settling.
Block paving driveways, priced roughly GBP 80 to GBP 115 per sqm, are another option that can be worked on in damp conditions, but heavy rain may delay joint filling and final laying phases. Railway sleeper raised beds are generally less weather-dependent and cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre. These can often be built in wet weather provided the ground is stable enough for secure fixing.
Turfing is possible during wet weather, typically priced around GBP 18 to GBP 35 per sqm assuming the ground is well-prepared. Soft ground can lead to uneven settling, so ground clearance, levelling and topsoil preparation are essential beforehand. Avoid laying turf on waterlogged soil to prevent rotting or poor establishment.
For those planning their garden, 3D garden design services (GBP 150 to GBP 450 per project) can be commissioned anytime regardless of weather. This digital approach takes the guesswork out of design and helps clients visualise wet-weather solutions before work starts on site.
Ultimately, the key to managing landscaping in Loughborough and the East Midlands during wet weather is flexibility and realistic expectations. Each project depends on site specifics like soil condition, access, garden levels, drainage needs and clearance. A site visit is invaluable to provide accurate quotes and to plan work phases sensibly considering the weather.
