Landscaping work is often weather-dependent, and wet conditions can complicate projects. At Worthington Landscape & Design, based in Loughborough and serving the East Midlands, we understand how to navigate these challenges practically and deliver quality results even when the skies aren’t clear.
One common concern is how rain affects groundwork and material installation. Heavy or prolonged wet weather can soften the soil, making access difficult and potentially leading to compaction or uneven surfaces. To protect the ground, we often use temporary matting or trackway to reduce damage, especially where machinery or heavy materials are involved.
When it comes to patios, laying concrete or paving slabs in wet weather is possible but requires caution. For concrete bases, excess moisture can affect curing times and strength, so we monitor conditions closely and adjust scheduling if necessary. Indian sandstone patios, which typically cost between GBP 90 and GBP 120 per square metre, and porcelain patios, priced from GBP 110 to GBP 150 per square metre, can be installed during light rain but not during heavy storms or if the ground is waterlogged. Drainage preparation is crucial to prevent future pooling and frost damage.
Block paving driveways, with guide prices ranging from GBP 80 to GBP 115 per square metre, are another popular feature that can be started in damp weather, provided the base layer is properly prepared and stable. Because drainage, edging, and excavation requirements vary by site, we always recommend a thorough site visit before confirming the quote or schedule.
Railway sleeper raised beds, which cost between GBP 85 and GBP 140 per linear metre, tend to be less weather-sensitive. Installation mainly involves securing sleepers and preparing the ground surface, which can often continue in wet weather if the soil is not overly saturated or muddy.
Laying turf can be trickier during wet conditions. Turfing prices start at GBP 18 per square metre when the ground is ready, but wet soil can make levelling and achieving a firm base difficult. For best results, turfing is ideally done when the soil is moist but not waterlogged, and we advise customers accordingly.
3D garden design work is unaffected by outdoor conditions since it’s computer-based. Prices range from GBP 150 to GBP 450 depending on garden size and revisions. Starting your design during wet periods is a great way to plan ahead, so your landscaping work can begin as soon as the weather improves.
All pricing guides depend on factors such as site access, ground levels, drainage, clearance, and material specifications. A site visit is always important to provide a tailored, accurate quote and to set realistic timelines based on current weather and ground conditions.
